The association through its Director of African Affairs Amb. Johnny Metchie decried the action of the coup Leaders stressing that it is a wrong signal to the International community.

Amb. Metchie said already IAWPA has begun reaching out to leaders with the aim of seeing that the Sahel country quickly returns to democracy. He also said it is important that the coup leaders understand the role of the United Nations in promoting peace not only in the country but in other parts of the world.

“We have been studying the situation in Niger Republic and must reiterate the fact that all parties need to be carried along in ensuring that peace and democracy returns to Niger Republic. The recent action of expelling the UN Chief in the country is to say the least, not encouraging. We are calling on the coup leaders to revisit their decision considering the role of the UN in ensuring that peace is maintained”

Meanwhile the International Spokesman of IAWPA Amb Emmanuel Nkweke in an interactive session with media men yesterday said maintaining peace in the West African sub region is imperative to the association. Amb. Emma who spoke on the heels of the forthcoming conference on Peace said the association is concerned about the situation in Niger Republic as well as the ripple effects the war between Israel and Palestine will have in Africa especially in the West African sub region. He said the association is also making plans to visit the Niger Coup Leaders with a view to seeking ways to bring about a quick return to democracy.
