Tension has enveloped the sleepy village of Uruk Uso, in Abak local government area of Akwa Ibom state as the entire community has been thrown into mourning following the gruesome murder of one Mrs. Sunday Isaac, a 55 – year – old member of Ekpene Atai family by her biological son, identified as Akaniyene Sunday Isaac.
The suspect, LEADERSHIP gathered, took the rash decision to brutally end her mother’s life after a heated argument over money, “but when the money could not be raised immediately, and handed over to him, he hacked her to death.”
Describing the sad incident as “shocking, sacrilegious and satanic,” one of the family members of Ekpene Atai, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said; “this day will remain a day not to be forgotten in a hurry for a 23 – year old man, to have taken the final decision to kill his mother that gave birth and nursed him to adulthood, only to be rewarded this way.”
“It started like a minor argument that degenerated into a serious trouble. When the young man requested for money from his mother, who has always given to him anytime he asked, but on the fateful day, the mother told Akaninyene, that there is no money with her.
“The reply from his mother infuriated the young man who is supposed to be the one taking care of his mother, to a point of having to pick up a matchet and dealt with the mother who passed out before because she could not get immediate medical attention,” he recalled.
Another family member, who described the incident as unfortunate, lamented that “the entire family is currently in a state of mourning,” describing the deceased whose remains have been deposited at the mortuary, as “a peaceful woman.”
Efforts to speak with the Police public relations officer (PPRO), SP Odiko MacDon, proved abortive as he could neither pick several calls nor return the calls or text a reply, but a senior police officer confirmed the suspect is held up in the detention facility at the state Police headquarters, Ikot Akpan Abia near Uyo, the state capital, awaiting completion of investigation on the matter before arraignment in court.
