Four persons have emerged as winners and carted away six different prizes at the just concluded karting motorsport competition titled ‘Girls on Track’ organised by the Automobile and Touring Club of Nigeria (ATCN) in Abuja.
The all-girls karting sport competition which drew five participants from Ethiopia and hosts Nigeria saw Nice Hercules emerge as the overall best winner in Karting Slalom, the second prize went to her Ethiopian sister, Regina Hercules while Nigeria’s Khalila Wakama went home with third trophy.
In the digital motorsport, the Ethiopian trio of Regina, Nice and Benedict Hercules went home with first, second and third positions accordingly. All other participants also received certificates of participation.
Girls on Track is sponsored by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), a global motoring sports organization through ATCN, FIA’s sole representative in Nigeria.
The three-day event which took place between November 3-5, 2023, with day one and two commencing at the Light way Academy, Wuse 2, with training of officials on rules and how to officiate karting tracks, while day two witnessed training of about 100 participants on rules of the game between ages 9-16.
Participants were also introduced to and trained in digital kart used for selection of the best drivers who later participated in karting practice, out of which about 20 drivers qualified for the final day of the competition held at the Eagle Square, Abuja.
Earlier in his address, the ATCN president, Mr. Ishaku Bamayi, said that the FIA sponsored Girls on Track “is a platform for grassroots development of motorsport in Nigeria among girls”.
He therefore charged participants to take advantage of the competition to maximize their potential and go on to compete at a higher level, especially for those of you who are interested in competing at international competitions”.
A representative of FIA regional training provider from Motor Sports South Africa, Stephen Harding, trained the ATCN team and other motor sports stakeholders on how to officiate karting sports and the girls on karting techniques.
