The Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) with support from Japanese Government have raised awareness on plastic circular economy in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The campaign which is under the UNIDO programme; “Promoting sustainable value chains through circular economy practices,” came as efforts are being made to ensure the reuse, recycling, minimisation and possible outright phase out of plastics with a pilot model display in Jabi, Abuja.

Speaking at the stakeholders’ awareness campaign and display of the plastic circular model, director of AEPB, Engr. Osilamah Braimah, said there was a big challenge on how to dispose plastics due to its wide usage and inability to biodegrade.

“If you bury a plastics bottle for years, it remains that way for thousands of years as it does not biodegrade.

“It is for our own survival as a people that we use resources in an intelligent manner, so that we can manage our environments and achieve sustainable development,” he said.

Braimah urged stakeholders and the general public to participate in reducing and managing plastic wastes through circular economy practices.

UNIDO national programme coordinator, Oluyomi Banjo, said; “What we are doing is to see how we can manage plastic wastes in our environments, not necessarily to dump them or burn them, but look at how to get business value from them.”
