Concerned with the prevailing cases of kidney disease, the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital, Damaturu has been conducting a minimum of 100 free dialysis sessions to patients as directed by governor Mai Mala Buni, the Chief Medical Director, Dr Baba Waru Goni has said.
Yobe is among the states with high cases of renal failure especially in Bade, Nguru, Jakusko and Karasuwa local government areas compelling the administration of governor Buni to intervene through offering free dialysis.
The chief Medical Director said though the free dialysis was meant for the indigenes of the state, the intervention has brought succor to many families taking into cognisance the expensive nature of handling and treating kidney disease.
“These services have brought in a lot of succor and relief for both the individuals, their families as well as the communities.
“Kidney disease is a very expensive disease that can drain on the lean resources of individuals, family and communities hence the intervention by the administration of the Executive Governor of Yobe State Hon Mai Mala Buni towards offering free dialysis is a very welcome development,” Dr Goni emphasized.
Also speaking the head of the dialysis unit of the Teaching Hospital, Aliyu Abdulkadir said apart from the free dialysis for the indigenes, the Teaching Hospital equally offers free first three session to non-indigenes a situation he said that encourages many people from across the country especially neighbouring states to visit the TH.
“We are dialyzing almost 100 patients every week and even if the kidney patient is not the indigene of Yobe State and visited the hospital seeking help, this hospital has approved three session free.”
A kidney patient who is benefiting from the free dialysis Kalli Mustapha said he has spent over N1.5 million in kidney dialysis in other hospitals until he was intimated of the Yobe State Teaching Hospital free dialysis.
“I was having N1.5 million for the dialysis and when the money
finished I had to sell half of my house to continue until I was told of the free dialysis here and referred from Nguru to the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital. They are conducting free dialysis for us.”
Also, Abdulrahaman Umar, another beneficiary said, “Its about ten months now I had encountered this disease and was referred from Federal Medical Centre Nguru to this place. “We are receiving good medication here because before coming here, there was a time that I spent over N200, 000 just for arteriovenous fistula installation,” he said.
