The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on the federal government, as well as the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) to take concrete steps towards repairing the nation’s refineries in order to guarantee self-sufficiency in petroleum production for domestic use.

The student body pointed out that Nigeria will not achieve rapid economic growth should she continue to import petroleum products from other countries of the world for the domestic use of her citizens.

The national umbrella body of the Nigerian students stated this in a statement issued and signed by its National Senate President, Comrade Elvis Ekundina, who further lamented that the country’s continued reliance on importation of petroleum products has further worsened the forex crisis being experienced nationwide.

Ekundina maintained that the Federal government must also ensure that the refineries work at optimal capacity when running so as to produce enough petroleum products to meet the country’s daily consumption.

“It is our belief that refurbishing and recommissioning our faulty refineries to optimal production level will resolve the nation’s energy crisis. When we are able to repair our refineries and put them back to good use, Nigeria’s problem with fuel insufficiency and pricing will be resolved.

“It is good to have our refineries fully working alongside the Dangote refinery as this will ultimately make Nigeria a net exporter of refined petroleum products and this will also allow for stability in fuel prices”.
