Vice chancellor of the University of Jos (UNIJOS), Prof Tanko Ishaya, has said the institution has the capacity not only to recycle papers, but to recycle the waste from human beings.
He pledged to ensure that UNIJOS became a global village that will be the envy of all within and outside Nigeria.
Ishaya made the promise when he performed the foundation laying of a modern toilet and sanitation facilities at the Remedial Sciences Department and the commissioning of students’ rest spots at the weekend to mark his second year in office.
He said the Water and Sanitation Hygiene (WASH) is a global project and a fundamental right because there is no way “you have more than 10 people or even one person and you are not able to provide sanitation facilities.”
He argued that it is very important that they provide a dignified sanitation facilities for their students and staff and others who are around the department
“One important unique thing about this model is that it is not just the normal toilet that we all know.
This is what is happening across the world today. Human being’s waste is currently being turned into energy production. Faeces has also been turned into various things in-terms of recycling processes that are very important to our environment,” he said.
In his opening remark, the Head of the Department (HoD) of Remedial Sciences, Prof Ponchang Wuyep, said before now staff and students of the department go to nearby bush to defecate, stressing that the dignity of an individual towards sanitation is something that they thought must be protected and preserved.
