Some concerned youths, under the aegis of “The Voice of the Common Man,” have taken to the streets of Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, in protest of alleged corruption in Nigeria’s judiciary.

The youths, who were drawn from the six geopolitical zones, and numbering over 200, staged the peaceful protest as a result of conflicting judgements in some parts of the country.

The youths accused the judiciary of arbitrary judgements, saying they were no longer comfortable with the outcome of judgments being delivered, especially those of the 2023 general elections.

The youths, who carried placards, said the Nigerian judiciary is no longer the hope of the common man. They cited the cases in Imo, Rivers, Plateau, and Zamfara states as some of the judgments that robbed the people of their political mandate.

Some of the placards read: “Say no to corruption“, “Give the Common Man Hope”, “Protecting the Peoples Mandate, believe Nigeria would work” etc., amongst others.

Speaking, one of the conveners, Brian Kroma Sagbe, said the protest aims to call the federal government and the Nigerian Judicial Council’s attention to the issue, saying enough is enough.

Sagbe said: “The protest is to call on the high and low in the society to look out for the level of corruption in our judiciary system. Look at the cases of Imo, Zamfara, Plateau, Rivers and other parts of the country.’

Also, another concerned Nigeria Youth, Kabbiru Libda, expressed disappointment with the judiciary, saying: “Because what is seen nowadays is like the judiciary in the country is run like a place where justice can be bought after election. If the system is not addressed then there is danger looming.”
