Nigeria’s first lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu has flagged off the distribution of N950 million to 250 vulnerable elders across the country.

Senator Tinubu while flagging off the package in Abuja, said each state would get N25million, while each of the selected elders would receive N100, 000.

The president’s wife directed that the beneficiaries be selected without any form of discrimination.

“This scheme is to support 250 vulnerable elderly citizens aged 65 and above in all 36 states of the federation, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and veterans from the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA).

“These selected beneficiaries will receive a sum of N100,000 each. This is to cushion the effect of the economic situation and to alleviate the burdens of our esteemed elders during this festive period.

“The total sum to be disbursed is N950,000,000 as approved by the Governing Board of the Renewed Hope Initiative. Each state of the federation will receive the sum of N25,000,000.

“We are committed to ensuring that each state receives this gesture, without discrimination,” she said.

In Nasarawa State, Remi also distributed N100, 000 to the vulnerable elderly citizens ahead of the Christmas celebration.

The gesture under the “Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS) with the theme: “Better Days Ahead”, targets 250 beneficiaries in the state.

Declaring the scheme opened in Lafia, the first lady said veterans from the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA) were also part of the initiative.

According to her a total sum of N950,000,000 was approved by the Governing Board of the Renewed Hope Initiative for distribution to all the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

She said the empowerment programme was borne out of commitment to the well-being of the elderly citizens even as she pointed out that the scheme marks a significant stride in the administration’s pursuit of a more inclusive and compassionate society.

“As we approach the festive season, it becomes very important to emphasize the significance of prioritizing our elderly citizens in our initiatives. By reaching out to the elderly this festive period, we not only honour their contributions but also acknowledge the unique encounters they face.

“To our senior citizens, I urge you to embrace life to the fullest, prioritize your health, nurture your minds, and strength your bonds with loved ones and with God. These are keys to a rich and fulfilling life in your golden years,” she stated.
