Rebels Kill 19 Civillians, One Other In Burundi

The government of Burundi reported on Saturday a devastating attack by rebels in the western region that resulted in the loss of 20 lives, with all but one of the victims being civilians.

The assault, claimed by the RED-Tabara rebel group, took place near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo on Friday evening. According to the rebel group’s statement, they declared responsibility for the deaths of 10 members of the security forces.

The incident unfolded in the town of Vugizo, an area in close proximity to the rebels’ base in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The attack signifies a concerning escalation in the ongoing conflict in this region of Burundi, sparking fears of further violence and instability.
