The Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) has stressed its commitment to research and vocational education, aiming to surpass other higher learning institutions.

Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, the Rector, said this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. He noted that such investments aim to attract more grants to the college.

Dr. Abdul, describing YABATECH as Nigeria’s oldest educational institution established in 1947, noted its consistent ranking as the number one polytechnic for six years. He further expressed the institution’s goal to rise beyond being the leading polytechnic and aspire to become the country’s top tertiary institution.

“Our focus is to surpass the standards of a university. Despite our current designation, our vision is to exceed expectations and redefine our identity,” Dr. Abdul stated. “We are concentrating on vocational education, research, and obtaining additional grants. Eventually, our achievements will speak for themselves.”

Highlighting the institution’s community involvement, the rector revealed that YABATECH concluded a four-day initiative offering free eye screenings and cataract surgeries for Lagos residents. Over 400 individuals benefited, with more than 300 receiving cataract surgery at Gbagada General Hospital, while others received glasses, lenses, and medications.

“Community engagement is a fundamental responsibility of a tertiary institution,” Dr. Abdul said. “This eye screening and surgery program, done in collaboration with various entities, is our way of giving back to society. It’s crucial to address eye health, as vision is an invaluable gift often taken for granted.”

The program was conducted in partnership with Yaba Local Council Development Area (Yaba LCDA), Lagos State Ministry of Health, Albasaar International Foundation, and Ambassador International Limited (a Non-Governmental Organization).
