Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has declared that he will open the second phase of the popular Mile One (Rumuwoji) Market in Port Harcourt before the end of January 2024.

The second phase of the market had been under lock and key since 2017, when it was completed by the administration of the immediate-past governor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Ezenwo Wike.

Recall that the market, which is the largest market in Rivers State, was gutted by fire during the administration of former Governor Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi.

Fubara spoke yesterday during the official flag-off of a thank you visit to all the markets, which attracted leaders of various markets in the state.

The governor, who was represented by the state chairman of National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Chijioke Ihunwo, said: “On behalf of His Excellency the executive governor of Rivers State, we want to thank the traders who are doing business in our State. It’s not easy for you to leave your State and come to Rivers State to trade.

“Rivers State is a peaceful State where people can come and do their business, and the Governor is a man that has passion for traders and a man that listens to people, he has heard your concern and I want to assure you that between now and January this market will be allocated to traders.”

The governor stated that no politician will be given a shop in the market because politicians are not traders.

He said: “No politician will be given this market because we are not traders, the market will be given to those who are trading. The Governor of the State is a man that listens to people, so go home and sleep because this market will be shared with traders.”
