Barely two days before the new year, a hit-and-run incident claimed the life of a pedestrian on Saturday near the Mobil filling station, towards Otedola Bridge in Lagos.

The Lagos Territorial Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed this tragic incident in a statement issued in Lagos on Saturday.

Farinloye said that the victim was fatally struck by high-speeding vehicles, and the body was severely mangled, making identification impossible.

He added that the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) had been alerted to assist in removing the mangled body from the highway to avoid further accidents caused by moving vehicles.

Farinloye urged Nigerians to prioritise safety awareness, especially during the festive season, citing numerous observed fatalities along major highways during routine patrols.

He recounted another recent incident where an articulated truck, due to brake failure, fatally hit a woman at Dalemo bus stop, Ado Odo/Ota LGA, Ogun State.
Unfortunately, the victim died instantly, and efforts to identify her family were unsuccessful due to a lack of identifying information.

NEMA, therefore, urged residents in these areas who have lost contact with their relatives to contact the FRSC Officer, Akowe of the Ota Unit, through Tel nos: 08109257844, 08059090151.

Farinloye said that NEMA had been actively patrolling major highways during the festive period to support lead agencies in road safety, ensuring prompt and effective emergency responses.

He advised commuters to sensitise their drivers, especially if they appear exhausted, fatigued, or drowsy while driving. Bringing attention to safety officers nearby can encourage the driver to take a break before continuing the journey.
