Suleja local government area of Niger State has issued a notice of its decision to implement a total ban on the sale and consumption of liquor in the area from January 1, 2024.
A statement issued to journalists yesterday by the council’s spokesman, Haruna Garba Kaninko, said the notice was to all liquor vendors, hoteliers and the general public.
It said; “This position is in tandem with the First Schedule of Niger State Liquor Law CAP 71 where it stipulates nine local government areas as prohibited areas for sales and public consumption of liquor.
“In a series of meetings held between the council and liquor vendors, hoteliers and other stakeholders from security to religious leaders at the council secretariat, Suleja local govt maintained that it would implement the liquor law and warned all to adhere strictly to its decision as offenders would face full wrath of the law.
“To achieve this, the local govt has decided not to grant liquor processing consent to any vendor or hotel operator.
“It has also dissolved all committees it created for monitoring of the sale and consumption of liquor and would replace it with a special taskforce to enforce compliance and to arrest, confiscate and ensure prosecution of any defaulter according to the provisions of the liquor law.”
