The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has urged members of the National Assembly (NASS) to ensure the equitable distribution of the thousands of bags of rice and other food items recently provided to them by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja, the Executive Director of MURIC, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, stressed the need for transparency and fairness in the allocation of food relief items among the lawmakers.

“Each of Nigeria’s 109 Senators reportedly received N200 million worth of food items, while their 360 counterparts in the House of Representatives were given N100 million worth each,” Akintola stated.

Expressing concern over contradictory claims by some lawmakers regarding the receipt of palliatives, Akintola remarked, “We view this as an attempt to undermine or downplay the Federal Government’s efforts to alleviate the sufferings of the masses. Some legislators are creating confusion.”

He further questioned the inconsistency in the disclosure of the palliatives, saying, “How can only one lawmaker openly showcase thousands of rice bags to constituents while others remain silent? Why do some senators deny receiving these items? Is there a lack of unity or intentional sabotage within the Senate?”

“MURIC demands immediate clarification from the Senate and House of Representatives leadership. The spokespersons of these houses must provide clarity without delay. Delay can lead to misinformation which may incite the masses against the government,” Akintola emphasised.

The organisation appealed to lawmakers who have received the palliatives to swiftly commence the distribution among their constituents. Akintola stressed the importance of transparently publicising the allocation process to counter misinformation and positively highlight the government’s efforts.

“While urging Nigerians to exercise patience, we emphasise that this delay in distribution is not the fault of the government. Tinubu and Shettima have fulfilled their obligation by initiating the distribution of palliatives. The responsibility now rests with our lawmakers,” Akintola asserted.

MURIC reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the fair distribution of the received items, emphasising its mission to champion the rights and welfare of all Nigerians, regardless of religious beliefs, ethnicity, or gender.
