Kano Judiciary Records 29,108 Criminal Cases

Kano State Judiciary said a total of 29,109 criminal cases were filed across various courts in the state in the 2022/2023 legal year.

Kano State chief judge, Hon. Justice Dije Abdu Aboki, made this known while delivering her speech to mark the beginning of a new legal year 2023/2024 and valedictory session in honour of retired and late judges of Kano State.

According to Justice Aboki, a total of 415 criminal cases were filed in the High Court, 5,432 cases in the magistrate’s court, while the Shariah court received 23,261 criminal cases.

She said, “During the legal year under review, a total of 414 criminal cases were filed in the high court from which 340 were fully disposed of. Of a total of 2,290 civil cases filed before this court, 623 were disposed of. The total number of motions filed were 261 out of which 329 were disposed of.

“The court also registered 1,257 fundamental human rights applications where 827 were disposed of. At the appeal section of the high court, a total number of 631 appeals were filed, 458 were disposed of.

“A total number of 449 notices of appeal were filed at the Appeal section of the High court where 209 were compiled and transmitted to the court of Appeal. The Appeal section of the High court successfully translated over 90 percent of documents and records of proceedings received from litigants and upper sharia courts.

“The magistrate’s court received a total of 5,432 criminal cases where 3,405 were disposed of. A total number of 2,546 civil cases (including small claims and rent cases), were received by the same court where 1,918 were disposed of.

“The Shariah court of Appeal received a total of 189 civil cases and disposed of 125. No criminal appeal was received by the court. While 89 motions were received and 75 disposed of.

“The Shariah courts department 68,290 civil cases, and disposed of 46,364 while criminal cases received were 23,261 out of which 19, 264 were disposed of.

“The Kano multi door court house received a total of 260 cases where 211 were resolved,” Justice Aboki said.
