Following the pronouncement of the Supreme Court affirming Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress, (APC), as Governor of Lagos State on Friday , there was jubilation across the state as residents and party supporters trooped out in good numbers to celebrate.
Sanwo-Olu, who returned to Lagos after attending a special meeting of all APC governors with President Bola Tinubu in Abuja, was welcomed by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, members of the state executive council, party chieftains, party faithful and well- wishers, amid pomp and pageantry at the state House, Marina.
The reception at the state House was sparked-up with drums and a song of praises to God for the victory.
Addressing the media and the jubilant crowd, Sanwo-Olu said, “From expressing interest in an election to the tribunal, to the Court of Appeal, and to the Supreme Court, which is one of the beauties of democracy, where you can indeed express whatever grief that you have to the fullest.
“So,I want to thank God for taking us through all of that process. It’s all behind us now and we need to be very gracious in victory.
“But the victory is not about us. It’s really for all of our teeming supporters, and Legosians in general because what the victory does or what the affirmation or the confirmation does is that he propels us to want to do more, but it also gives us a validity.
“And the fact that the citizens have confirmed and the various institutions that have been set up have also confirmed us as a legitimate government. So, what we will be expecting is for us to, as usual, get to work very quickly and open our doors to everybody that wants to engage with us, that feels they have something to contribute. ‘’
The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, in a congratulatory message issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Eromosele Ebhomele, described the verdict as “a victory well deserved.”
The speaker said: “The judgement by the Supreme Court is a further affirmation that the All Progressives Congress, APC, has the support of Lagos residents as reflected in the governorship and House of Assembly elections in 2023.’’
