As the race for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket hots up, the Esan Alliance Movement (EAM) at the weekend said the emergence of Senator Monday Okpebholo as candidate of the party would lead to victory in the governorship election in September.
The group noted that the lawmaker’s qualifications and electability set him apart from fellow aspirants who underwent screening, including Dennis Idahosa, David Imuse, Lucky Imasuen, Ernest Umakhile, and Clement Agba.
A statement made available to newsmen signed by its convener, Dr Samson Okoduwa and secretary, Imade Osagie, noted that the significant highlight in Okpebholo’s favour is his defeat of Senator Clifford Ordia of the PDP, breaking the jinx in Edo Central.
“This victory showcases Okpebholo’s ability to secure votes within the party and positions him as the sole aspirant capable of bringing the much-needed support to the APC in the governorship elections.
“Beyond his political achievements, Okpebholo’s philanthropic endeavors and genuine affection for the Esan people underscore his popularity. His unwavering commitment to community welfare stands as a clear testament to his leadership qualities, emphasizing that an alignment with his candidacy would not only secure votes but also resonate with the electorate.
“In contrast, other aspirants face challenges that could impede the party’s success. Col David Imuse, the current chairman of the party in the state, lacks electoral experience and political clout, having ridden on the coat tail of Sen Monday Okpebholo to secure his own unit. Imuse’s potential candidacy could jeopardize the APC’s chances in the upcoming elections.
“Similarly, the previous gubernatorial contender, Ize Iyamu, is seen as a risky choice, having faced defeat twice in previous races. The sentiment among party members is that the Governorship ticket should rotate to Edo Central, further undermining Ize Iyamu’s bid,” the group said.
