Justice Abimbola Awogboro of Federal High Court, Lagos has convicted and sentenced a widow, Mrs. Sulaimon Adunni, to three years imprisonment for attempting to smuggle cocaine to London, United Kingdom (UK) by ingesting it.

Justice Awogboro jailed the 58-year-old widow after she pleaded guilty of the one-count charge of drug trafficking brought against her by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The prosecutor, Abu Ibrahim, told the court that the convict was arrested on October 26, 2019 by the NDLEA at Screening 1 Point of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, during the outward clearance of passengers on Virgin Atlantic Airline flight to Heathrow Airport, London.

Ibrahim also told the court that the offence contravened Section 11(b) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap. N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

Based on her guilty plea, the prosecutor urged the court to sentence her under the section of the NDLEA Act for which she was charged.

But the defence lawyer, Dennis Warri, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy on the ground that his client has realised her action; hence, she has since become remorseful.

Justice Awogboro, in her judgment, sentenced her to three years imprisonment but ordered her to pay N2.5 million as fine instead of the custodian sentence.

In a similar development, a 45-year-old hard drug trafficker, Onyejiuwa Prince Ifeanyi, was also convicted and sentenced to three years imprisonment by Justice Daniel Osiagor of the same court.
