Demolition: Abuja Community Seeks Wike’s Intervention

Residents of Nuwalege community in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have called on the minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike to come to their rescue as they have become homeless following the demolition of their community.

The residents who lamented that their houses were demolished without prior warning and compensation from the FCT administration, appealed to the minister to correct the anomaly.

The chairman of Association of Koro Communities in Nigeria, FCT chapter, Comrade Adamu Isyaku made this known yesterday while speaking to journalists at the demolished community.

The department of development control at FCTA recently demolished houses and other property worth hundreds of millions rendering most of the residents homeless.

Adamu explained that the demolition was without compensation and that no directive was given to them by the administration not to build any structure in the community.

According to him, the residents have been staying in the community for hundreds of years without encroaching on anybody’s land, and that the indigenes are the owners of the community.

“We are saying no to this injustice. How can somebody just come to demolish a whole community without compensation? That is wrong. So, we are appealing to the FCT administration and President Bola Tinubu to consider our plight and do the needful,” he said.

Adamu further said that as a result of the demolition, residents of the community stand to lose everything including their farmlands if the land is snatched away from them.

“You cannot come and take our ancestral land and then say I should not even farm or build on our land. It does not make any sense.

“As I am talking to you now, our community chief’s palace is marked for demolition. So, where do they want us to go now? We now stand risk of displacement, following this demolition.

“We are appealing to the government of FCT to come to our aid. The original inhabitants of Abuja-FCT are Gbayi, Ebira, Koro, Nupe, Bassa, Gwandara, Gede, Dibo, among others and our communities are facing risk of displacement if nothing is done,” he said.
