A non-governmental organisation, Rubbies Development Foundation (RDF) has donated educational and sanitary items to the FCT School of the Blind, Jabi.
The items included braille, stalos, walking canes, slates, uniforms, detergents, sanitary pads and tissue papers.
Making the donations recently in Abuja, founder/CEO of the foundation, Lilian Akpet, said the gesture was part of the NGO’s commitment toward enhancing learning for children with special needs.
Akpet stressed the need to ensure that children with disabilities are encouraged to explore their full potential and make a positive impact in the society.
“We have been doing this in the past through our ‘Back to School Education Support for Young Persons with Disabilities’ and we are highly committed to sustaining this initiative.
“We are focused on equipping the vulnerable young girls and boys with the relevant knowledge and skills to enable them advance their rights and attain their full potential. For me, it is a way of giving back to society,” she said.
Akpet called on well-meaning Nigerians, organisations and government at all levels to pay serious attention to addressing the needs of PWDs.
While pledging to sustain advocacy for young vulnerable persons, she cautioned against discrimination against PWDs, saying they are part and parcel of the society and must therefore be given equal rights and opportunities to excel.
Receiving the items on behalf of the school, a senior teacher, Mrs Faith Reuben, said the donation came at the right time as the school was in dire need of the items. She commended the NGO for making sacrifices to put smiles on the face of the students.
