Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called on the people of Rivers State to allow the Ogoni ethnic nationality to produce the governor of the state come 2027.
Akpabio made the call at the weekend during a victory thanksgiving service organised by the senator representing Rivers South-East senatorial district, Senator Barry Mpigi, at Saint Cyprian’s Anglican Church, Koroma-Tai in Tai local government area of the state.
The senate president, who did not refer to anyone in particular, said the people of Ogoni have experienced and loyal leaders who could be trusted to do the job.
He lauded the immediate-past governor of the state, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, for his role in the last election which turned the table in favour of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, pointing out that it was the basic reason why the South-South geopolitical zone had produced the minister of the Federal Capital Territory for the first time.
Earlier in his remarks, Wike said there were people who are unhappy with the level of unity which exists in the state.
The former governor said the presence of leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was proof of the peace and understanding that reigns in the state.
Also, Senator Mpigi thanked God for his support and guidance and expressed gratitude to Wike for the role he has played in his life and the lives of others.
Mpigi described Akpabio as an uncommon Senate President and thanked him for the decision by the Senate to appoint him as the chairman of the senate committee on works.
