A rights advocacy group, Save the Children International has advocated for the empowerment of women and girls through strategic investment.
Director of Advocacy, Campaign, Communication and Media, Amanuel Mamo, stated this yesterday at a media briefing held in Abuja to commemorate this year’s International Women’s Day themed; “Invest in women: Accelerate progress.”

He noted that the absence of substantial investments in women hinders discussions on their empowerment and societal progress.
He said, “Recognising the pivotal role of gender equality, women’s empowerment, and well-being is paramount for fostering prosperous economies, peaceful nations, and environmental sustainability. The landmark introduction of the world’s first Women’s Budget Statement in 1984 marked a milestone, catalysing positive transformations for millions of women and girls worldwide.

“Amidst escalating gender inequality, promoting women’s economic empowerment necessitates acknowledging the profound impact of investing in their development. Recognizing women’s rights as human rights forms the cornerstone of efforts towards gender equality.

“Social protection interventions emerge as pivotal tools in empowering women and girls, facilitating access to opportunities while mitigating inequities. Investments in social assistance and insurance programs offer vital support such as food security, healthcare access, and shelter, safeguarding women’s rights through various life stages,” he said.
