The federal government has told the newly decorated comptroller-general of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Mrs Kemi Nanna Nandap, to face the task of crafting out deliverable strategies that would ensure effective protection of the country’s land, air and water borders, stressing that her tenure would be judged by how well the nation’s borders were secured.
The minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration yesterday during the decoration of Mrs Nandap as the 19th comptroller-general of the NIS in Abuja.
Tunji-Ojo, who urged her to bring her certificates and training to bear on her new job said, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu took risk to appoint you. So, you can’t dare to disappoint him. As a matter of fact, you must build a service that will be the ‘pride agency’ in Nigeria.
“Mr President would be proud if you realise that your tenure is marked by a series of ongoing reforms that is already reshaping the landscape of effective service delivery, reform policies and the place of welfare of Nigerians seeking travel documents and other critical services at the forefront.”
The minister who harped that the safety of Nigeria depends solely on how well the nation’s borders are protected, said, in the security of Nigeria, the NIS has a great role to play, hence, the need for the new CGI to be creative, innovative and be conscious to the fact that, once a mistake is made, she may not have the opportunity to correct it.
Buttressing those activities at the various immigration offices was now business unusual, Tunji-Ojo said, having held command positions across the country, she should be conversant with the issues hampering adequate manning of the land, air and water borders.
“Mr President did not appoint you to give excuses, proffer solutions, and if you think you can’t meet up, honourably resign,” he added.
Responding, Nandap who expressed gratitude to President Tinubu and the minister said she was fully prepared and committed to serving the nation with utmost dedication and integrity, pledging to use the functions of the service to alleviate the economic challenges the nation is faced with to the best of her ability.
