Federal government has engaged with officers in selected Federal Unity Colleges and state Senior Secondary Schools to enhance the quality of teaching and learning in the schools.
The executive secretary of National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC), Dr Iyela Ajayi, who declared open a two-day workshop for the key scheduled officers said it’s one of the commission’s strategies to improve quality of education.

Speaking on the theme, “Attaining Sustainable Development Goal 4: Senior Secondary Education in Perspective,” Ajayi said it is apt considering the challenges bedeviling the sub-sector and the need to provide intervention to schools especially in the areas of infrastructure, equipment and capacity development of the personnel.
He said in line with the renewed hope agenda of the present administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the commission has initiated moves to collaborate with some development partners to provide technical and financial support to the Senior Secondary Education in Nigeria, amongst others.

“Let me therefore thank everyone here, especially our resource persons for accepting to contribute towards the development of Senior Secondary Education in Nigeria,” he said.
Also speaking, the national president of the Association of Professional Counselors in Nigeria (APROCON), Prof Ekundayo Oholi, called for the training of officers in Federal Unity Colleges and state Senior Secondary Schools to curb social vices in the education system.

According to her, “We are here to sensitize schedule officers about the present social vices in our country, and we encounter new ones every year. We need to tackle them, especially in secondary schools.
“We want to give them a new orientation, to change the mindset, especially regarding the ‘quick money’ syndrome that is leading our youths into various vices such as drugs and cyber fraud. These were not prevalent before but have unfortunately become normalized in our society.

“There’s a need for training and retraining of both the students and those who handle them, to ensure they are better informed. When they are better informed, they can develop better strategies to handle these situations. That’s why this workshop is timely and essential in equipping scheduled officers with the necessary tools.”
