Kano State governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reopen the country’s borders for the importation of food to curb hunger among ordinary Nigerians.

Yusuf who decried the worsening hunger and starvation in the country said it was caused by the frequent hike in the price of commodities.

The governor in a statement issued yesterday by his spokesperson Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, made the appeal when he received the comptroller-general of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) Alhaji Bashir Adewale Adeniyi at the Government House, Kano.

He said one immediate intervention that can make food available and affordable to “our teeming population is for the federal government to consider the reopening of the borders and allow the importation of commodities.”

Governor Yusuf emphasised on the prevalent hardships faced by the populace, particularly during the sacred month of Ramadan, underscoring the necessity of opening the borders to alleviate their distress.

He expressed satisfaction with the NCS’ initiative to commence the distribution of food items to the people of Kano and urged the agency to ensure that “this benevolent act reaches those most affected.”
