Right activist and convener of Nigerian Unity and Progressive Forum, Bar. Ifeanyi Egwuagu, has alleged threat to his life following his calls for nationwide peaceful protest against the prevailing economic hardship in the country.
In a statement issued in Abuja yesterday, Barr. Egwuagu said he was accosted by three strange faces who warned him never to make such call against the government or face the consequences.
He said they accused him of inciting the people against President Bola Tinubu when the government is taking steps to improve the nation.
“I was leaving a restaurant somewhere in Garki Area 7 Abuja and heading towards my car parked outside when three men alighted from a dark blue Prado jeep with no number plate and walked toward me.
“The one in front greeted me politely and asked if I was Barr. Egwuagu, to which I answered in the affirmative.
“Next thing he said he has been looking for me for my own good, which is to warn me to stop inciting the people to protest against the government and that if I fail to backtrack, they will allow me to go home that night and imagine what will befall me. I summoned up courage to ask who they were but they left immediately without response,” Barr. Egwuagu narrated.
Continuing he said the incident has left him in palpable fear for his life such that he no longer goes out at night no matter how pressing it is.
The rights advocate had repeatedly accused the government of being insensitive to the plight of the people and specifically called on civil society organisations to take the lead in embarking on nationwide peaceful protest to draw the attention of the government to the sufferings of the people.
