A Para Powerlifter, Lucy Ejike, has solicited the support of the Federal Government and corporate organisations for the sport for development of the game in Nigeria.
Ejike, a silver medalist at the just concluded World Championship in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos.
She said that para powerlifting team have what it takes to conquer the world if only they can get sponsors and financial assistance from corporate organisations and governments at all levels.
“Government is really trying financially and cannot do it alone, but we need more to be able to be the number one and best in the world.
“They treat us equally with able body people, there are individuals who love what we do but don’t know how to come in to support the sport.
“We need financial assistance for our team to perform better at the next qualifiers to ensure we surpass the previous record,’’ she said.
Ejike further said that the federation urgently needs financial support from companies, individuals and government to enable them to prepare for the qualifiers, slated for June in Georgia.
“This last qualifiers, I believe with God, we will perform very well. It will enable us to participate in the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games in France.
NAN reports that Ejike secured her silver medal on the final day of the event of the just concluded Para Powerlifting World Championships in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, in the women’s -67kg category.
The Para Powerlifter has therefore assured Nigerians of winning more medals for the country at the upcoming Olympics in Paris.
