Cross River State government is set to rehabilitate 10 more roads for the smooth flow of traffic and businesses activities in the Calabar South local government area.

The state commissioner for works Engr. Pius Ankpo stated this in Calabar when he answered questions from journalists in his office yesterday.

Ankpo said, “We are going to do more roads which to some extent might look like white elephant projects.”

On the claims in some quarters that ongoing road rehabilitation and construction projects in the state were being executed by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC),  the works commissioner said it was a lie.

He said, “For the purpose of clarity all the roads done in Calabar, were done by the state government.

“Two roads in this state are done by the NDDC. I want to say that a distinguished Senator has not yet done any project. We are waiting to see NDDC’s roads.

“All the projects you see were initiated by Senator Bassey Edet Otu. The major challenge in Cross River State has been roads,” Ankpo stated.

The commissioner who could not explain the total amount earmarked by the Otu’s administration to rehabilitate spoiled roads and failed culverts within the metropolis stressed that the state government spent below N100million to rehabilitate parliamentary extension and Watt market area roads.

“We spent less than N50 million to asphalt Watt Market Area. Under the supplementary budget, we were able to carry out the repairs,” he said.
