Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto has said the outcome of the 2023 general elections would be determined by the youths who make up 60 percent of the Nigerian population.

Kukah, who stated this yesterday as a guest on the Channels TV political and current affairs programme, Politics Today, charged youths to seize the moment by taking up the task of changing the country.

The cleric said the 2023 election is the moment of the youths, whom he said are better informed and more patriotic than those who govern them.

He said, “I mean, this election, whether we like it or not, is going to be determined by the young people of Nigeria, who are better informed, far more patriotic than those who govern them, who love this country more than those who govern them, and who understand where the rest of the world is far better than those who govern them. So, guess what, if you’re young, and you’re, if you’re young, there’s a job for you to change this country.

“And the wonderful part of the story is that we all say that young people make up about 60 percent of the population of Nigeria. This is their moment. They have the ability, they have the capacity.”

He said the youths should seize the opportunity that is available to them ahead of the elections.

The eminent cleric lamented that dubious resort to ethnicity and regionalism by criminals who are only interested in themselves and their children.

“So, the challenge for young people is to move beyond the silos that have held us back. We have to break down these walls of dubious ethnicity and regionalism, breakdown these walls erected by criminals who have no interest in their future, who have interest only in their future and the future of their children. And let’s create a wonderful country from Sokoto to Akwa Ibom,” he said.
