Severe rainstorms on Sunday have left about 40 communities without power in Ogun State, following extensive damage to electrical infrastructure in the areas.

The development has disrupted daily life and hardship on residents.

The storm, which struck around midday accompanied by rains, resulted in numerous fallen electricity poles and damaged installations, particularly in the areas of Sango-Ota and Mowe in the State. This damage has caused a widespread blackout affecting multiple communities, the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) reported.

The affected areas include Iyana Iyesi, Osuke Town, Egan Road, Iyana Ilogbo, Ijaba, Ijagba, Itele, and many others extending to Olokuta and Pentagon Estate, among others. Residents have been advised to stay clear of the hazardous conditions caused by broken poles and sagging wires.

“Our technical team is diligently working to clear and replace the broken poles and other compromised installations to restore power as swiftly as possible,” a spokesperson from IBEDC stated in a press release issued late Sunday.

Further illustrating the storm’s impact, a video making rounds on social media shows fallen poles lying on vehicles in the flood-hit Sango-Ota area, underscoring the severity of the storm’s effects on the community’s infrastructure.

IBEDC has urged the public to exercise caution around the damaged electrical facilities and to report any safety hazards to the authorities immediately.

Restoration efforts were ongoing, and updates will be provided as the situation develops.
