The vice president for the Africa INTERPOL executive committee, AIG Garba Baba Umar (rtd), has said that the international police was working seriously to ensure that one of the executives of a global crypto-currency firm, Binance, Nadeem Anjarwalla, who escaped from lawful custody in Nigeria in March is extradited to answer for his crimes.

The retired assistant inspector general of police turned INTERPOL boss stated this in a television programme on African Independent Television (AIT) monitored by our correspondent on Tuesday.

According to him, “Anjarwalla is in another sovereign nation and Kenya, where he is believed to be hiding, is a member of INTERPOL. There are memoranda of understanding under the international police cooperation that when you commit a crime and run into any member country, you make sure that the guy is brought back to justice.

“We re getting all the other documents to process (his extradition). Even if he is hiding in Kenya or anywhere in the world, the INTERPOL will get him apprehended and hand him over to the appropriate authorities looking for him. That is the work of the INTERPOL. It makes sure that fugitive who escape and arrested are brought to justice in the country where they are needed.”

He further said that with what is currently going on, one day, Anjarwalla will be brought back to face justice in Nigeria.

Speaking on the relationship between Nigeria and Kenya in terms of extradition, especially with Nnamdi Kanu’s case, Umar said INTERPOL was never involved with the extradition of the outlawed IPOB leader from Kenya.

He said INTERPOL has repeatedly stated that they were not involved in the rendition of Nnamdi Kanu to Nigeria.

Recall that in March, the federal government contacted the INTERPOL issued an arrest warrant for the apprehension of Anjarwalla, who escaped from lawful custody on Friday, March 22, 2024 in Nigeria.

LEADERSHIP reports that Anjarwalla and another Binance executive are currently facing money laundering and tax evasion charges before a Nigerian Court in Abuja.
