Residents of Kwali Satellite Quarters in Kwali area council of Abuja could not hide their joy, when they said that the minister, Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Nyesom Wike, has broken 35 years jinx of abandonment and flood challenges that have ravaged the community for years, by constructing an 11 kilometre Yangoji-sukuku -Ebo road in the area.
A fish and plantain farmer, Sarah Luka, while speaking with me in Kwali over years of flooding faced by the residents as a result of perennial flood from River Moadna-Egya, said when the Yangoji-sukuku -Ebo road is opened, it would boost economic growth in the council.
Luka lamented that accessing schools and hospitals in the area poses a serious threat to the people who go through other routes, especially Yangoji before schools and hospitals in Kwali, that the construction work has offered them relief.
“We are praying that this road is completed on time as promised by the contractor, because we have suffered so much in the community because of prolonged neglect from other FCT administration. We are grateful to the present minister of FCT for coming to our aide,” she said.
Another resident, Mrs. Mosunmola Oyewole who commended the minister for his timely intervention, adding that their children face serious challenges in accessing their school, as well as hospitals and other health care facilities, saying that their community, Satellite Quarters, have been cut away outrightly for years from the main town.
Oyewole said if the road is completed as promised by the contractor, the minister would have saved them from every five years flooding, appealing for more facilities in the quarters
It can be recalled that the FCT minister has said that residents of the FCT, especially those living in the remotest areas of Abuja deserve more infrastructure like their counterparts in the city center.
Wike made the observation when he inspected the 11 kilometers Yangoji-sukuku – Ebo road in Kwali area council.
He spoke against the slow work pace on the road, assuring that such infrastructure provision will improve security of the area with difficult terrain.
Also, the contractor handling the road construction explained that the road is presently slow, as the company is trying to fix the complex aspect of the road, ahead of the rainy season, adding that the job would be delivered before the end of the 2024.
The Yangoji, Sukuku Ebo road has 17 culverts with four of it completed as work is progressing on the remaining ones.
