The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), has engaged in a significant discussion with the government of Ogun State, to advance the implementation of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) standards and ensure the safety of CNG operations within the state following a recent accident involving a CNG truck in the area.

During the meeting, both parties discussed aligning state regulations with federal standards, enhancing safety protocols, and streamlining processes for CNG adoption as an alternative fuel source.
Director-general of the agency, Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, informed Governor Abiodun that SON has developed and adopted 80 CNG-related standards to ensure operators adhere to the highest safety protocols, minimising risks associated with handling and usage.

He reiterated SON’s commitment to upholding stringent quality standards in line with global best practices, emphasising the role of standardisation in promoting consumer confidence, protecting public health, and fostering sustainable economic development.

On his part, the governor reiterated his administration’s strong support for initiatives aimed at diversifying the energy mix and reducing reliance on traditional fuels.

Abiodun emphasised the critical need for ensuring the safety and reliability of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) infrastructure to facilitate its widespread adoption across the state.

The discussions also addressed broader national objectives, particularly the implementation of strategic projects such as the CNG initiative under President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda.

These initiatives aim to alleviate the economic burden associated with fuel subsidy removal while advancing Nigeria’s transition to cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions.
