Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has raised the alarm over the widening trust deficit in the nation, saying it has weakened the fabrics that have held the nation together as a people.

A research conducted by the governing council of the institute to identify factors responsible for current sad and unfortunate developments in the nation revealed a widening trust deficit at three levels between government and the citizens, between and among the various ethnic and socio-cultural groups, and generally among the citizens.

The president and chairman of council, Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) Mukhtar Zubairu Sirajo disclosed this while addressing newsmen in Abuja ahead of its forthcoming summit titled: ”Citizens Summit for National Integration, Peace and Security” slated to hold in the nation’s capital.

Sirajo said no nation thrives and progresses in an atmosphere of distrust. He challenged organisations and individuals to always place Nigeria first above personal and any other interests. He stressed the need to entrench a culture of social justice for national integration and sustainable peace.
Sirajo noted that there is a need to develop a new communication culture and thrust for Nigeria, adding that there is need for effective national mediation, reconciliation, and investment in peace building for national integration.
He stressed the need to reengage and include the Nigerian youths, women, and people with disabilities in leadership and governance, adding that there is need to strive for balance, equity, fairness, and justice as a way of life.
“For the country to move forward, we must change the paradigm on how we engage the citizens and the techniques of dialogue.
“Government must learn the modern art of citizens engagement and the people must on the other hand appreciate the fact that the task of nation building is a collective responsibility in which the citizens too, have a great role to play,” he added.
