No fewer than 20 students of Government Secondary School, Gwale and Rumfa College have been trained in woodwork technology in Kano.

The training was organised by the Kano State Ministry of Education and is aimed at enhancing their entrepreneurship skills.

The first batch of students received practical training on how to make wooden chairs from the trees planted within the premises of the Kano Education Resource Department (KERD).

While supervising the programme, the state commissioner for education Alhaji Umar Doguwa explained that the training is in line with the present administration’s policies of strengthening the education sector through a live skills acquisition programme to make students in the state more productive and self-reliant.

He disclosed that plans are underway by the present administration to establish three technical workshops each at the technical colleges across the state as part of its commitment to promote entrepreneurship and skills acquisition programmes at the grassroots, as well as a technical college of education with a view of providing advanced technical education for all technical teachers across the state.

“The whole aim is to see that a student of technical college can practically apply what he is being taught in class. As you can see, these students are now very proud that they made up these chairs by themselves. The government’s plan therefore is to make sure that these students can make all the furniture needed for our schools ” Doguwa explained.

While presenting certificates of attendance to the graduating students, Doguwa urged them to make the best use of what they had learnt during the programme for their benefit and the benefit of the state at large.

During the supervision, the education ministry also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) on the Management of Aqua-Cultural, Animal Husbandry and Gardening to promote agricultural skills among students in the state.

AFAN national president, Dr Farouk Mudi, said the association had come up with the idea of partnering with the ministry to promote agricultural activities among students.

He stressed that Kano is one of the leading states in terms of agricultural production, and the association deems it imperative to commence the programme to boost the students’ morale in the profession.

Earlier, the director of the Kano Educational Resource Department Hajiya Rabi Inuwa Hussain commended Governor Abba Yusuf for resuscitating the department by bringing back all the training programmes which were hitherto organised to boost students’ knowledge of entrepreneurship.
