Nasarawa To Engage Women In Climate Change Campaign

The Nasarawa State Government has disclosed developing an action plan that will make women the central point of its campaign against the effect of climate change.

The state’s Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Aisha Rufa’i Ibrahim made this known at a press conference in Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State.

Ibrahim said the campaign will focus on activities that could exacerbate climate change and its consequent impact on the people.

She explained that the impacts of climate change such as extreme heat, unpredictable weather conditions and floods pose great danger to the unity and economic stability of the family, while calling for collective action against the phenomenon.

According to her, given their resilient disposition, dedication and commitment to a cause, women have a greater role to play in mitigating the impact of climate change.

Speaking on the negative impact of social media on children, the Commissioner appealed to parents to constantly monitor their wards and children to curtail the increasing rate of social vices as a result of its use.

She also noted that the advent of social media has exposed children to all manner of influence and abuse, even as she called for regulation on the kind of content consumed by the children.

Mrs Ibrahim also noted that a child does not need to go outside the house in the era of the social media before committing crime or engages in unlawful activities unlike what was obtainable in the past.

She urged parents to also check the type of company and friends their children and wards keep, noting that doing so will reduce the amount of their exposure to societal ills.
