The torture and murder of a 200-level student of Ajayi Crowther University in Oyo State has sparked reactions in Delta State.
The deceased, identified as Alex Timileyin, was both a prince of the Itsekiri and Uvwie royal families in Delta State.
Timileyi was reportedly beaten to death at a hostel of the private university on Friday on the allegation of stealing another student’s phone.
Already, the management of the institution has expelled the students alleged to have been involved in the killing of the undergraduate student.
The suspects, according to the university authorities, have been handed over to the operatives of the Oyo State Police Command for prosecution.
Meanwhile, an Itsekiri traditional leader and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State, Chief Ayiri Emami, reacting to the incident in a video on Sunday, condemned the incident and demanded for a probe of the unfortunate incident.
Ayiri also called Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and the minister of education, Prof. Tahir Mamman to take drastic action over the circumstances surrounding the killing of the 200-level student of the school.
He demanded for the shutting down of Ajayi Crowther University over the murder of Alex.
The public relations officer of the university, Mr Olufemi Atoyebi, confirmed the killing of the student.
Atoyebi also confirmed the arrest of the suspects who murdered the student after torturing the deceased between 6 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday, when he reportedly passed on.
He, however, maintained that there was no cultism within the institution, saying that it upholds a zero-tolerance policy for any antisocial behaviour or misconduct.
