2 Killed As Gunmen Attack Police Checkpoint In Ebonyi

Two persons, a policeman and a suspected gunman, were killed when gunmen attacked a police checkpoint along the G-Hostel Junction axis of the ever-busy Enugu-Abakaliki Express Road, Ebonyi State, yesterday.

The incident, LEADERSHIP gathered was said to have happened at the Junction near the popular PRESCO junction in the capital city.

Confirming, the incident, the police public relations officer, PPRO, SP Chris Anyanwu said though the incident took place the details are still sketchy.

He stated that the command has communicated with the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the area for details of the attack adding that he is yet to get the full details of the attack.

“I went for a programme and I just came back to the office now. The rumours of the attack is on the social media but I can’t give details now. I have called the DPO of the area and am still waiting for him to give us details.

“People are saying that one policeman was shot dead but I can’t confirm that for now. There is also another rumour that one of the gunmen was arrested but all the information are still rumour. The details will come when we get comprehensive report from the DPO,” he said.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the gunmen who were three in number operated on a motorcycle.

The hoodlums reportedly opened fire on the policemen at the checkpoint killing one instantly. In the gun duel that ensued the police were said to have shot dead  one of the hoodlums while the other two occupants of the motorcycle escaped.

The incident caused panic and tension at the popular junction as traders, shop owners, motorist and passersby scampered for safety.
