A windstorm wreaked havoc in Birnin Kebbi and other local government areas of Kebbi State.
It killed five residents, injured several people and destroyed property worth millions of naira.
LEADERSHIP gathered yesterday that four people were killed in the Maiyama local government area and an infant in the Birnin Kebbi local government area of the state as a result of the windstorm, which was accompanied by heavy rains.
The storm blew off rooftops and collapsed many buildings in the Birnin Kebbi metropolis and other Maiyama local government area villages.
Property, including furniture, electronic gadgets, household utensils, and foodstuffs, were destroyed in the disaster.
Makerar Gandu, Yar Yara, Filin Sukuwa, Illelar Yari, and Zinari Hotel are the areas most affected.
One of the victims, Babangida Usman, informed journalists at Makerar Gandu Area that part of their building structure collapsed inward, burying his three-month-old daughter, Fatima, alive, and she died instantly.
The deputy executive secretary of Kebbi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Muhammad Attahiru Giro, told reporters that the agency had assessed the magnitude of the windstorm and would provide emergency relief to the victims.
Governor Nasir Idris, who is in Saudi Arabia for the hajj, ordered that the necessary assistance be provided for those affected by the havoc.
The governor extended his condolence message to the families of those who lost their loved ones in the disaster.
