Western Delta University (WDU) in Oghara, Delta State, has assured parents and students that the institution is safe.

The assurance came after last Thursday’s robbery incident at the students’ hostel. The criminals entered the main hostel, harassed the students and stole their mobile phones and power banks.

Its vice-chancellor, Prof. Augustine Ikelegbe, described the incident as unprecedented in the university’s history and said adequate measures have been taken to ensure the university is now safer.

In a statement yesterday, Ikelegbe said efforts were being made to ensure the elements who perpetrated the acts are apprehended.

The statement reads in part, “The vice chancellor, Professor Augustine Ikelegbe, and Management of Western Delta University, expresses deep sympathy with our dear students, staff, parents and stakeholders, over the robbery incident that occurred in the early hours of Thursday, 20th June, 2024, when some criminal elements entered the Main Campus, and harassed students in the Main Hostel, some of whom lost phones and power banks.

“The situation was quickly brought under control by the intervention of security agencies, including the Delta Hawk, Police, Army and NSCDC.

“Management understands that affected students are traumatised and parents are worried about the situation, which is unprecedented in the history of the University.

“We are grateful to God that there were no serious injuries. Management assures all of our deep concerns and pain.

“Management has extensively liaised and consulted security agencies and stakeholders on the incidence. Investigations are ongoing and the criminal elements would be apprehended and punished according to the law.

“The vice-chancellor wishes to assure parents and the general public that the Campus is safer and more secure with the measures in place.
