Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, yesterday urged relevant stakeholders to collaborate with the government to prevent fire incidents and the attendant losses often incurred from fire incidents in the state.
The governor stated this at the Lagos International Fire Safety Conference, which was themed,
“Stakeholders’ Collaboration: A panacea to incessant Fire Disasters in Lagos.”
Sanwo-Olu said all residents have a role to play in fire disaster prevention and management which are usually due to negligence and human error.
He, therefore, implored all citizens to be committed to be fire prevention advocates and champions by raising alarm early enough when they see acts that could lead to fire incidents, understanding that fire accidents is from carelessness.
Sanwo-Olu added that checking fire disasters and its consequences is more than providing the equipment.
He also urged participants to collaborate with the state government to educate residents in its bid at enhancing fire safety through robust policies, strategic investments and community engagements to have a Lagos where fire disasters are drastically reduced.
The commissioner for special duties and inter-governmental relations, Olugbenga Oyerinde, said the state government had been proactive in its response to fire and emergencies with the provision of fire equipment to mitigate disasters.
The director and chief executive officer of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, underscored the need for public-private partnerships to develop a cutting-edge approach to the prevention of fire incidents in the state.
Adeseye highlighted the investment the state government has made over the years in equipping the fire service and emergency agencies to prepare them for fire prevention.
