President of the Nigerian Academy of Letters, Prof. Sola Akinrinade, has charged researchers to be committed to quality research that will positively impact society through informed policymaking, economic and industrial growth, and improved standards of living.

He also task the scholars on the need for mentorship and maintenance of integrity, by avoiding falsification of research work through manufactured data, false claims and other vices that are detrimental to expected outcome of research products that are meant for public consumption.

Akinrinade, the pioneer vice chancellor of Osun State University, gave the admonition in Osogbo yesterday in his keynote address at a two-day proposal writing and grantsmanship workshop for early career researchers across the country sponsored by UNIOSUN in conjunction with the University of Birmingham, the Nigerian Academy of Letters, and TETFUND.

Speaking with journalists at the event, Akinrinade stressed the composition of tertiary institution governing councils, saying people who can make an impact should be members.

Declaring the workshop open, UNIOSUN VC, Prof Clement Adebooye, decried the downward trend of research productivity and impact among universities in Africa compared to other continents of the world, saying that universities in Africa seem to be too much engulfed with graduate output but with decreasing focus and emphasis on research.

Adebooye, who was represented by deputy VC academics, Prof. Lawrence Kehinde, stressed that research is the engine that drives progress both at national and global scales, adding that investment in research comes with a lot of benefits and advantages.

He charged participants to make the best use of the opportunity provided by the workshop that drew participants from universities across the country.
