President Bola Tinubu has written the House of Representatives, seeking the amendment of the Police Act, 2020.

Tinubu, in the letter read on the floor of the House on Tuesday, conveyed the Amendment Bill, which seeks to amend the tenure of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

Recall that incumbent IGP Kayode Egbetokun had tried to lobby the National Assembly on a Bill seeking to raise the retirement age of Police officers.

The President had appointed Egbetokun as the IGP in June 2023 for a tenure of four years, which ends in June 2027.

However, according to Section 18(8) of the Police Act 2020, Egbetokun, who was born on September 4, 1964, is expected to retire in September 2024, when he will be 60 years old.

The Police boss would only have been in office for one year and three months by September, with two years and nine months remaining of his four-year appointment given the current retirement age.
