The Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) has announced that it will hold a national economic dialogue titled “Nigeria’s Economic Future: 25 Years of Democracy and Beyond” on August 21, 2024 in Abuja. The event, aimed at tackling the nation’s economic challenges, is a precursor to the 30th Nigerian Economic Summit (NES#30) scheduled for October 2024.

Since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999, the country has seen political progress, but economic growth has lagged due to policy inconsistencies and governance issues. Initiatives like the National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (NEEDS) and the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) have struggled to achieve long-term development.

The economic dialogue seeks to leverage Nigeria’s democratic strengths to foster sustainable economic growth. It will analyse the economic journey since 1999, explore policy consistency, and draw lessons from successful economies like the Asian Tigers. The event aims to provide policymakers with actionable recommendations for creating a stable and prosperous economic environment.

Key speakers include Prof. Osita Ogbu, co-chair of the National Advisory Council, NESG Faculty of Economists; Dr. Amina Salihu, deputy director of Nigeria MacArthur Foundation; and Temitope Iluyemi, senior director of Global Government Relations for Africa Region at Procter and Gamble.

The event will feature policymakers, corporate leaders, and development partners. The outcomes are expected to guide Nigeria toward a sustainable economic future.
