A coalition of civil society groups in the Niger Delta and South-South regions has distanced itself from the planned August 1 nationwide protest against hardship in the country, warning that it could lead to chaos and undermine the progress made in the region.

The coalition alleged that the protest, which is being promoted by certain factions within the regions, aims to cause disruption and chaos under the guise of representing the interests of the Niger Delta and South-South regions.

In a statement, they noted that the planned protest does not have a clear and lawful mandate and could easily be hijacked by unscrupulous elements seeking to exploit genuine grievances for their selfish ends.

Comrade Israel Uwejeyan, speaking on behalf of the Coalition of Niger Delta Civil Societies, emphasised that their organisations represent the voices of peace, progress, and unity, and are committed to pursuing their objectives through dialogue, constructive engagement, and lawful means.

The coalition urged their members and affiliates to refrain from participating in the planned protest, citing the potential harm it could bring to their communities.

They emphasised that true progress can only be achieved through sustained efforts at building dialogue, understanding, and collaboration with all stakeholders, including the government and private sector.

The coalition also called upon security agencies to be vigilant and ensure that the peace and security of their regions are not compromised by the planned protest.

They urged all well-meaning citizens of the Niger Delta and South-South regions to remain calm and not be swayed by provocative rhetoric and unfounded allegations.

Additionally, the coalition reiterated their commitment to peace, development, and good governance.

They encouraged their members to continue to engage in constructive activities that promote the well-being of their communities.

“We are committed to resisting any attempts by selfish individuals or groups to incite unrest and destabilize our regions.

“Our focus remains on empowering our youth and women, advocating for good governance, and promoting peace and reconciliation. We stand united in our resolve to ensure that the aspirations of our people are realized through peaceful and legitimate means,” they stated.
