Minister Of Culture, AMP, Chocolate City Others Pay Tribute To Onyeka Onwenu

The Minister of Culture, Arts and Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musawa, alongside other entertainment big weights have offered tributes to the late singer, actress and broadcaster, Onyeka Onwenu who died on July 30, 2024 at age 72.

Onwenu who slumped after performing at the birthday function of the CEO of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, Stella Okoli, was proclaimed death when she was rushed to the Reddington Hospital in Victoria Island, Lagos.

The minister who described Onwenu’s influence on generations of Nigerian artistes as immeasurable said her music was a testament of her ability to bring people together through her art.

“She was a true patriot who used her music to promote unity, harmony and patriotism. Her music was a reflection of our cultural values, and her impact will be felt for generations to come.”

National President of the Association of Movie Producers (AMP), Ambassador Queen Ebigieson said Onwenu’s poise, dexterity as a singer, inspired her take up singing as a career. Onwenu, she said also gave her best on film sets.

“She was a music icon and a legend. I grew up listening to her songs like ‘One Love Keeps Us Together, Onyeka’s personality is meek, calm and strong. One thing I know is that she loved music and entertainment. She died doing what she loved the most,” said the guild leader.

“I listened to her while growing up. I came in contact with her during the X Factor show where she was a judge. Aunt Onyeka is dedicated and disciplined. Her work ethic is inspiring and commendable. I hope she benefitted from the music industry. her loss will be greatly felt in the industry, said CEO of Chocolate Factory, Peter Abuchi Ugwu.

Born January 31, 1952, Onwenu who held a master’s degree in Media Studies from The New School of Social Research, New York; and a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and Communication from Wellesley College, Massachusetts, began her music and journalism career in the 1980s. She has released several albums all through her career which span across genres.

As an actress she has contributed to the Nigerian film industry with movies such as Widow’s Cot, Half of a Yellow Sun, Nightmare among others – winning Best Supporting Actress for her role in the Widow’s Cot. She also was also decorated a member of the Order of the Niger (MON), and member Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).
