The Head of National Office, West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) Nigeria, Dr Amos Josiah Dangut, yesterday announced the release of the May/June 2024 West Africa Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results for school candidates, saying one million, eight hundred and five thousand, two hundred and sixteen candidates sat for the examination.

Dangut added that results of two hundred and fifteen thousand, two hundred and sixty-seven, were withheld due to exam malpractice.

The WAEC boss, who spoke at a press conference yesterday in Lagos to announce the official release of the WASSCE result, stated that the body encountered challenges bordering on insecurity in some states and thanked the security operatives, the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), for providing security backup.

“The West African Examination Council has released the result of the council examination written in May/June 2024. One million, eight hundred and forty thousand, seven hundred and thirty-six (1,814,736) candidates registered for the examination.

Out of this, one million, eight hundred and five thousand, two hundred and sixteen (1,805,216) sat for the examination.

“One of the challenges we faced was security issues in the South East’s ‘Sit at Home’ order by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), which clashed with the days when major papers were to be written but this was resolved, and students were allowed to take the paper. Also, part of the challenges was the schools’ failure to upload the student’s Continuous Assessment Score System (CASS) at the stipulated time.”

The HNO stated that the body, “out of the 1,805,216 that sat for the exam, one million, three hundred and thirty-two thousand and eighty-nine (1,332, 389) candidates obtained credit and above in a minimum of any given subjects with or without English language and Mathematics. These statistics reveal the performance for 2024, which decreased by 7.69% compared to last year’s result.

“However, two Hundred and Fifteen Thousand, two hundred and sixty-seven (215,267) candidates’ results are being withheld concerning examination malpractice,” says Dangut.

He noted an increase in cell phone use in the examination hall despite the ban on organised cheating in some schools, and these cases were being investigated.

The WAEC boss also stated that “the results of candidates sponsored by the state government are withheld because the states still owe the council and therefore will not be released until payment is made”.
