KANSIEC Unveils LG Poll Guidelines To Political Parties

Kano State Independent Election Commission (KANSIEC) has read out the 2024 local government elections guidelines and timetable to political party leaders in Kano as well as the timetable for onward transmission to the ward members.

The chairman of the commission, Sani Lawal read out the guidelines and timetable of the election fixed to hold on November 30 and called on politicians to ensure a clean and violent-free process by addressing the collective interest of the people of the state.

According to the guidelines, in the election, only those that are 30 years of age or above can contest for chairmanship while for councillorship, one has to attain the age of 25 or above.

The candidate for chairmanship will pay a registration fee of N10 million while a candidate for councillorship position will pay N5 million which the chairman said is justified going by the current economic situation.

However, the chairman explained that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would not make its facilities available to state independent electoral commissions but only the PVCs would be used in the process.

 

“A candidate has to produce evidence of payment of tax as at when due or tax exemption for a period of three years immediately preceding the year of election.

“In the case of a councillorship election, he/she is nominated in writing by 15 persons whose names must appear on the register of voters for the ward in which he intends to contest the election;

 

“And in the case of a chairmanship election, he/she is nominated in writing by 30 persons, at least two from each ward whose names must appear on the register of voters in the local government he is contesting the election.

 

“In the case of a candidate contesting for chairmanship/vice chairmanship, she/he has to pay the commission a non-refundable deposit of N10,000,000 only.

 

“In the case of a candidate contesting for councillorship, he/she has to pay the commission a non-refundable deposit of N5,000,000 only.
