The pioneer president of the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters, Professor Umar Pate, has urged the youth to avoid social media misinformation and study the factors behind Nigeria’s challenges so that they can learn from developed countries.
Pate spoke at a peace summit in Yola, which was organised by Muhammad Tukur, the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Governor Fintiri on New Media.
Pate highlighted the dangers of misinformation in the digital era, stressing the need for critical thinking and responsible communication.
He urged the government to develop a strategic communication blueprint to avoid the pitfalls of misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation, which do not serve the public interest.
Earlier in his remarks, Tukur, appreciated current developmental strides, believing in the transformative power of youths as evident in his unparalleled achievements, particularly in the areas of education, youth empowerment, and governance.
“Under Fintiri’s leadership, we have witnessed a resurgence in educational development, marked by the implementation of free and compulsory education.
“The payment of WAEC and NECO fees for our students, and the revival of scholarships, including opportunities for foreign study.”
He added that, through constructive dialogue, they can build bridges across divides, foster empathy and understanding, and develop innovative solutions to complex problems.
